(English version below) Le Tavole gonfabili potrebbero essere il futuro del windsurf. Sicuramente, negli ultimi anni, alcuni marchi hanno apportato a questo tipo di prodotto notevoli miglioramenti, in termini di rigidità e resistenza laterale allo scaroccio, senza penalizzarne la trasportabilità, incrementandone sensibilmente le prestazioni. La Starboard è uno dei marchi che sforna i migliori prodotti del settore. La Starboard Airplane 255 2016 è la tavola più piccola di questa serie, e non ha la pinna centrale da 57 cm, come i modelli più grandi, ma, comunque, dispone di una pinna da 22 cm che consente, comunque, anche un utilizzo da parte di chi sta imparando. Inoltre, è equipaggiata con una pinna posteriore Drake freeride da 42 cm. Per garantire tenuta laterale in andatura ed in planata, la tavola è anche equipaggiata con dei profili di gomma squadrati in corrispondenza della parte centrale e posteriore dei rails. In generale, si vede che la tavola è progettata in maniera intelligente. La pompa per gonfiare la tavola è efficace, e nella fase finale, in occasione della quale la pressione da vincere è maggiore, può essere impostata in modo da pompare aria solo abbassando e non anche sollevando lo stantuffo. La medesima pompa si può utilizzare per sgonfiare rapidamente la tavola, che può essere arrotolata in maniera compatta, per riporla nel comodo zaino di trasporto. Pinne e piede d'albero, si montano su dei supporti di plastica rigida che vengono inseriti nella tavola, poco dopo averne iniziato il gonfiaggio. Una volta riposta nel suo zaino, la tavola risulta ragionevolmente comoda da trasportare (niente a che vedere con l'ingombro delle tavole rigide), con un peso del tutto di circa 16-17 kg, e può essere agevolmente riposta nel bagagliaio di una macchina anche di dimensioni medio-piccole.

Per quanto riguarda le prestazioni, la tavola si mostra stabile in andatura non planante, e sufficientemente boliniera (meglio con la pinna centrale), anche se non uguaglia le prestazioni di una tavola beginner rigida. Molto confortevole la sensazione di morbidezza sotto i piedi, che la rende particolarmente adatta ad un impiego per beginner e per bambini. In caso di cadute sulla tavola, la superficie relativamente morbida ed il rivestimento gommoso, evitano abrasioni o traumi. In virata e strambata base, la tavola offre indubbiamente un'ampia superficie di appoggio, in grado perdonare gli errori tipici dei principianti, consentendogli di capire ed apprendere in maniera progressiva la sequenza di movimenti da eseguire per chiudere la manovra. Consigliamo di montare il piede d'albero in posizione piuttosto arretrata, in quanto altrimenti ci sembra che la tavola abbia maggiore difficoltà a stringere adeguatamente al vento, in andatura non planante.

La Tavola è progettata anche per un uso da parte di principianti avanzati che vogliono accennare le prime planate. La relativa resistenza della tavola allo scarroccio ci fa ritenere che la superficie velica massima consigliata dal produttore vada tassativamente rispettata.

Recentemente, abbiamo avuto la possibilità di provare la tavola con vento più sostenuto (circa 15-16 nodi), abbinandola ad una vela Ezzy Zeta 6.4, verificando se e come la tavola gestisce la planata.

Ebbene si, la tavola è in grado di planare, ma per sintetizzare la sensazione, è come planare su un materasso..... Cioè, vi trovate sotto i piedi una tavola piuttosto larga, che che chiaramente si deforma leggermente sotto le sollecitazioni del chop (su piani d'acqua completamente lisci potrebbe andare meglio), dispendendo parte dell'energia trasmessa dalla vela. Per farla entrare in planata, dovete lanciarla bene al lasco, e poi risalire al vento, per quanto possibile. Credo che la tavola in planata risulti anche un po' penalizzata dalla pinna un po' troppo lunga, e che, purtroppo, a meno di modifiche alla scassa, non è sostituibile. Ovviamente, ho tolto la pinna centrale, con la quale credo che la tavola non possa planare (troppa resistenza).

Sicuramente, queste tavole sono ottime per l'apprendimento dei principianti (ottima galleggiabilità, e stabilità), e comode da trasportare. Ma non sono tavole da cui pretendere prestazioni particolari (come del resto anche il Fanatic Viper, tavola rigida che avevo in precedenza).

 

Inflatable  boards could be the future of windsurfing. Certainly, in recent years, some brands have add to this type of product remarkable improvements in terms of stiffness and lateral resistance to drifting, without penalizing their portability, and increasing their performance.

Starboard is one of the best brands that produces similar items. The Starboard Airplane 255 2016 is the smallest board in this series, and does not have the 57 cm central daggerboard, as the larger models, but still has a 22 cm central fin, which still allows its use by learners. In addition, it is equipped with a 42 cm Drake freeride rear fin. To ensure lateral grip while sailing and planing, the board is also equipped with rubber squared profiles at the center and rear part of the rails. 

In general, you see that the board is designed intelligently. The pump to inflate the board is effective, and in the final stage, when the pressure to win is greater, it can be set to pump air only by lowering and not even lifting the plunger. The same pump can be used to quickly deflate the board, which can be coiled in a compact manner to put it in the convenient carrypack. The fins and the mast foot are mounted on rigid plastic supports that are inserted into the board shortly after starting the inflation. Once placed in its carrypack, the board is reasonably comfortable to carry (nothing to do with weight and dimensions of rigid boards), with a total weight of about 16 to 17 kgs. It can be easily stored in the car trunk even of small or medium size.

As far as performances concerned, the board is stable in non-planing riding, and sufficiently able to sail on the wind (better with the central fin), although it does not match the performances of a rigid beginner board, in this regard. Very comfortable the feeling of softness under the feet, which makes it particularly suitable for use by beginners and children. In case of falling on the board, the relatively soft surface and the rubber coating, avoid abrasion or trauma. In tack and jibe, the board offers undoubtedly a large support surface, able to forgive the beginner's typical mistakes, enabling them to understand and learn progressively the sequence of movements to be executed to close the maneuver. We recommend mounting the mast foot in a rather aft position, otherwise it seemed to us that the board has more difficulty in riding properly to the wind, when not planing. 

The Board is also designed for use by advanced beginners who want to try the first glides. The relative resistance of the board to drifting makes us believe that the maximum sail surface recommended by the manufacturer must be strictly respected.

Recently, we had the opportunity to try the board with a stronger wind (around 15-16 knots), combining it with an Ezzy Zeta 6.4 sail, checking if and how the board manages  planing.

Yes, the Board can glide, but to summarize the feeling, it is like gliding on a mattress ..... That is, you have under your feet a rather large board, which clearly deforms slightly under the stresses due to the chop (on completely flat surfaces of water, it could be better), dissipating part of the energy transmitted by the sail. To get it into the glide, you have to bear away quite well, and then go back upwind, as possible. I think the board is also a bit penalized, as for gliding performance, by a little too long fin, and that, unfortunately, it is not replaceable unless you change the fin box. Obviously, I removed the central fin, with which I believe that the board can not plan (too much resistance).

Surely, these boards are great for beginners learning (excellent buoyancy, and stability), and comfortable to carry. But they are not boards from which to claim particular performances (as also the Fanatic Viper, anyway, a rigid board that I had before).
