The Bay of Silence (Playa del Silencio), in Asturias, Spain, was a truly exciting discovery for me. And I had not yet seen Cabo Vidio. A coastal trek allows you to see both of these two wonders.
Trekking: the Bay of Silence and Cabo Vidio, Asturias, Spain
Asturias is characterized by spectacular stretches of coastline. The mountains come close to the sea, and thus form imposing cliffs that plunge into the ocean, interspersed with incredibly beautiful beaches. I discovered the Bay of Silence (Playa del Silencio), one day in late May 2024, during a dinner stop, on one of my many trips to the Iberian Peninsula. In August 2024, I returned there, dedicating a day to it, and I did a coastal round trek, that you can see on the map below.
To begin our walk, we reached the village of Castaneras, and we parked in one of the paid parking lots, available on private land. Out of season, you can continue a few hundred meters along the road after the village, towards the sea, and leave the car in a clearing above the beach (in the Las Fuecaras area).
Shortly after this clearing, you start walking and take the road on the left that goes down towards the beach.
It is mandatory, after just a few meters, to dedicate some time to this amazing Bay. A rocky wall closes the bay to the South; several rocks are scattered in the sea, in front of the bay, to the West. The pebble beach faces West.
You then go up from the beach, and continue in a South direction. But after a few meters, you are forced to stop again, to admire another particular scenario: the path reaches "La caladoira", a point nestled between rocky peaks, and another wild beach to the East.
The path, then, turns inland and gains meters above sea level. You pass by El Nordés del Silencio, a memorable chiringuito, where you can come and enjoy a summer aperitif, in front of fairytale sunsets. Then, you take Camin de las Matas, nad pass in front of some beautiful houses, after which you turn left and go back towards the sea, to reach the Miradoriu Mexagón, where we stopped for lunch, sitting on a panoramic bench.
From here, we started to close the loop by going back inland, towards the N-632a road, and, a bit along paved roads, passing by the villages, a bit along paths in the woods (see our track), we returned to our car (6.5 km, and 1h and 20 minutes of movement).
If you have time and energy, you can follow the coastal route to the spectacular Cabo Vidio. We, instead, got in the car, went to Oviñana to have a refreshing drink (a nice Tinto de Verano, for example), and then went for a short walk to Cabo Vidio, which really impressed and moved us for its beauty.
Enjoy your walk. Fabio
