The Morteratsch glacier is one of the natural wonders of Engadine, in Switzerland. We reached it with a beautiful trek, on a splendid sunny autumn day, and it gave us a truly intense day, full of emotions.

Trekking to the Morteratsch glacier, in autumn: what a show!

We had already told you about the Morteratsch glacier in this article written by Daniele, who had reached it on an August day a few years ago. I also wanted to admire this natural beauty, together with the spectacle of the flora, and in particular the larches, that takes place in Engadine, in autumn. By now, for me, the trip here, at this time of year, is an almost obligatory appointment that I try, at all costs, not to miss.

As regards the itinerary taken, about the first part, there is not much to add, to what Daniele has already written. Having parked the car near the Rhaetian railway station, take the wide and comfortable valley bottom path, well indicated, which in about 3.5 km takes you under the rocky bastion, beyond which (October 2024) is the end of the glacial tongue. At this point, there are several information signs, and a wooden bridge over the stream that originates from the glacier (see map below). This is also the winter cross country ski track.

After a long stop in front of the glacier, in which I also contemplate the rest of the scenery that surrounds me, I reluctantly say goodbye to the creature, and begin the descent into the valley, concentrating more on the warm hues of the larches, which dot the valley, now isolated, now in spots, and the reddish slopes of the mountains in front, which light up in the last hours of the day.

Every now and then, I still take a look at the Morteratsch Glacier, down there, promising that I will come to visit him again to pay homage, and ask it how it feels....

Have a good walk. Fabio
