This summer I went to discover the surf spots of Northern Spain: Basque Country, Cantabria, Asturias and Galicia. I did a lot of research, and in this article I summarize the information I gathered.
Surf spots in Cantabria, Asturias and Basque Country, Spain
The northern coast of Spain is a true mecca for surfing. The series of beaches where you can practice this sport is endless, with conditions suitable for all levels. This article will focus mainly on the two central regions, Cantabria and Asturias, with some mention of the Basque Country. As for Galicia, however, I refer you to a specific article on this magnificent region. The article is based on the experience of some spots, and on the results of online research, for the others (the most), that I did before leaving. In this case, the sources are cited in the article, which you are invited to consult yourselves.
CANTABRIA
Just less than 150 miles long on Spain's northern coast, Cantabria is perfectly positioned to receive the westerly swells that sweep across the Bay of Biscay en route to France. These are the same waves that hit the famous spots in the Basque Country, although the geology here makes the surfing conditions very different.
Without the sheer cliffs of its neighbor, Cantabria is dotted with long, steep beaches that offer plenty of good beginner waves. It doesn't even have the submerged reefs of the Basque Country. The result is a region of medium to low waves that are a surfer's dream, carving fast turns on the lip and shoulder. A shortboarder's dream.
The orientation of the Cantabrian coast changes a bit near Santander. To the east, there are bays that face northeast. To the west, they open up a bit more to the Atlantic. The result? You can surf on both sides, but the surfing in Western Cantabria tends to be much more reliable and better in the summer months. Let's look at the main spots now.
