Great day of cross country skiing in San Bernardino, Grisons, Switzerland. Beautiful sunny day, and very good conditions on the trails.
San Bernardino, Grisons, 18/01/2025: a great day of cross-country skiing
San Bernardino, for those who live in the Milan area, or in Canton Ticino, is a valid and convenient destination for a nice day of cross-country skiing (read the description of the area - in italian at the moment).
On Saturday, January 18, 2025, I decided to return there for my first ski trip this year. It was an excellent choice. The snow conditions are good, as shown by the photos in the article. And in the next week, more snow will fall to reinforce the already decent snow cover. The valley, oriented North-South, is well exposed to the sun, and therefore you can ski without suffering too much from the cold. And in fact I enjoyed wonderful sunshine, and a beautiful blue sky that enhanced the panorama beauty, for a good part of the route.
I started, as usual, from the hostel parking lot (even if, since the parking lot was already full when I arrived, this time I had to leave the car elsewhere). I used the changing rooms under the hostel to get dressed properly, as always clean and comfortable, and I started. I bought the ticket at the cash desk at the start of the tracks (10 swiss francs, an honest price and well deserved money), and the nice gentleman who sold me the ticket, also offered me a delicious homemade cinnamon biscuit!

I set off to ski around 12:00.
As I often do, I headed towards the Dam, and then towards the Lido (Lago Doss). This time, I took a simple tour without too many digressions (see my track here in the article), also to not leave my wife alone for too long. We shared a nice stop for lunch at the Lido, which she reached on foot, and then a walk in the village, to enjoy the last lights of the day.
San Bernardino is not the cross-country skiing area that offers the wildest and most uncontaminated landscapes, but it certainly has a significant tracks development (29 km, of which 25 are currently open), with many possible significant branches (Fracc track, Forcola track - the latter however still closed, yesterday).
As already mentioned, the conditions of the tracks were impeccable, even at 12:00, when the sun was starting to warm up, and despite the passage of several skiers who had skied before me, in the morning. At midday, the crowding on the slopes was absolutely negligible, and I enjoyed skiing in complete relaxation.
In short, it was a beautiful day of leisure and training, which confirmed to me that San Bernardino is truly a recommended destination for our beloved sport.
Ciao. Fabio
