Pozo Izquierdo, Gran Canaria, PWA Windsurfing Grand Slam, 2023

Day 9: Daida Moreno extends incredible Pozo record to 22 event victories & counting, while Marcilio Browne defeats Marino Gil in super final to earn first Pozo victoryThe final day of the 2023 Gran Canaria PWA Windsurfing Grand Slam finished with a flourish as the forecast produced better than expected conditions - with 25-35 knot winds and small waves - which allowed both the Men’s and Women’s Double Eliminations to be completed after 8 enthralling hours of competition.

Wave Women’s 

Daida Moreno (Bruch Boards / Severne Sails / Maui Ultra Fins) extends her incredible winning run in Pozo Izquierdo to an unrivalled 22 event victories since 1999 after another dominant display. Daida had to do it the hard way in the final today after suffering a broken mast after her first jump, which meant she was on the back foot early on. However, despite the less than ideal start, Daida eventually powered to victory as she set the highest heat of the contest - 21.13 points - to leave the result in absolutely no doubt. The highlight included an insane frontside air 360 which earned an excellent 8.75 points. With victory in the bag, Daida celebrated by throwing herself into a double forward attempt as the buzzer sounded. Sarah-Quita Offringa (Starboard / NeilPryde / Maui Ultra Fins) led the opening half of the final, but couldn’t land any major telling blows to force a Super Final, which means Offringa walks away from Pozo Izquierdo with a solid second place for 2023, which is one place better than 2022.
Lina Erpenstein (Severne / Severne Sails) completed the comeback of the day in the Women’s Double Elimination as the German gathered momentum with a series of solid displays to firstly defeat; Caroline Foveau (Severne / Severne Sails) followed by Sol Degrieck (Severne / Severne Sails), Alexia Kiefer Quintana (Fanatic / Duotone) and Justyna Sniady (NorthSails / Maui Ultra Fins) to progress into the top 4. With the news that Iballa Moreno (Severne / Severne Sails / Maui Ultra Fins) was unable to sail due to a knee injury that meant things would get even better for Erpenstein as she received a bye into the next round, which would guarantee her a place on the podium - third. Iballa Moreno finishes fourth at the 2023 Gran Canaria PWA Windsurfing Grand Slam, whilst the top 5 is completed by Justyna Sniady. 

Men’s

Marcilio Browne (Goya Windsurfing) survived a late last day scare to eventually secure his first Pozo event victory. However, the reigning world champion was made to sweat it out after his teammate, and local favourite, Marino Gil (Goya Windsurfing) forced a Super Final meaning one extra 14 minute heat would decide this year’s event champion. Browne seized the initiative early on with a perfect double forward, whilst later in the heat the Brazilian would do brilliantly to rotate through a one-hand, one-foot backloop - despite the deteriorating ramps - to build an unassailable lead. Browne’s previous best result here was second last year, so he’ll be delighted to go one better this time around.Marino Gil sent the home crowd wild as he landed a double forward and a huge one-foot backloop in the dying stages of Heat 50 to setup a Super Final. The local boy couldn’t quite bring the event title in the end, but the 20-year-old should still be absolutely delighted with second place here after sailing superbly throughout the contest. Gil walks away from this week with his best result - second - and a first podium on the World Tour which will feel even more special being at his home event. Marc Paré (Fanatic / Duotone) started the day in fourth place, but after defeating - Ricardo Campello (Naish / Naish Sails) - in Heat 49 the Spaniard would advance into the top 3 to guarantee himself a second career podium. Paré was disappointed not to have beaten his friend, and rival, Gil in the battle for second and third, but moving up to second in the overall world rankings should help soften the blow. Having just being pipped to a place in the single elimination final by - Marino Gil - in the dying seconds of the heat, Ricardo Campello will be slightly gutted to have just missed out on the podium here after Paré edged him out this evening. Campello felt the conditions were too much of a gamble, but ultimately fourth place here is still enough to keep him in control of the world title race as he goes in search of his first wave world crown.
Philip Köster (Severne / Severne Sails / Black Project Fins) produced an excellent come back in the Double Elimination as the former 5-time world champion recovered from joint 9th in the Single to 5th place as he took down; Robby Swift (JP / NeilPryde), Victor Fernandez (Fanatic / Duotone), Alessio Stillrich (Fanatic / Duotone) - whom he posted the highest score of the day against - 22 points - and Leon Jamaer (Flikka / GUNSAILS), before Paré brought his come back to an end. Local Josep Pons (CS Custom Boards / Point-7 / Black Project Fins) completed the comeback of the Double Elimination as he climbed all the way from joint 17th in the single into joint 7th by the end of  today as the 39-year-old reeled off 5 heats on the bounce to earn his best result to date on the World Tour. Fellow local boy - Alessio Stillrich - who earlier in the day was involved in the closest heat of the day against Antoine Martin (Starboard / NorthSails) - shares joint 7th alongside Pons. Stillrich and Martin would finish the heat deadlocked on 18.76 points with Stillrich eventually progressing due to having the higher single wave score.The top 10 is completed by Jules Denel (JP / NeilPryde), Adam Warchol (Quatro / Goya Windsurfing), who achieves his first top 10 result on the World Tour, Antoine Martin and Victor Fernandez.

Red Bull Rockets Super Session

After 9 days of intense competition, and 8 hours of contest on the final day, the event concluded with a Red Bull Rockets Super Session, which saw Daida Moreno claim the Women’s top prize for a double forward attempt, whilst Antoine Martin was awarded the victory in the Men’s for a double pushloop effort. That concludes what has been an incredibly successful 2023 Gran Canaria PWA Windsurfing Grand Slam with results gained in every single discipline and several phenomenal performances over the 9 days.
